Train Trips
Our dad combined his love of photography with a few of his other favorite hobbies. We spent hours looking at trains, planes and sometimes automobiles with him because he wanted us along to share in his delight. Dad’s idea of a good time was a Saturday trip to Union, Illinois to visit the state railway museum and ride one of the steam trains. Cool when you’re 5, not so much when your 12! Or going to I-I-T on a Friday night to check out their amazing model railroad set up. It was fun to see but the real treat was the Salerno’s or Home Run Inn pizza we had before going. One of the best train trips though was up to Marengo, Illinois in the dead of winter where one of dad’s friends had a kiddie amusement park train set up all around his property and Jen and I could ride all day in the caboose until our fingers and toes were numb from the cold.
